Heading down in the morning to shuffle the boats. We have a tentative agreement to just trade my trailer for his boat and trailer. He says his is a Shoreline. Mine is an American.
Is Shoreline likely to be the original trailer to a 1960 boat?

The landfill isn't the Marathon County landfill is it? I did start up staining there and they use old hulls to make road beds. Painful to watch.

My daughter, Alaina, and I will be going together. We have the old boat hitched and ready to go!

Looks like Shoreland'r didn't start making trailers till 1971, so this is not the original trailer for the Skagit. But it has new tires and it fits the boat so unless it's rusted through, I'll probably trade.

Well, it is officially mine. We had a nice drive down this morning, 48 degrees in December.
Really nice guy, Matt is. He took the 100 Tower of Power Merc off of the Skagit for his Glastron/Carlson. I am pretty sure the Skagit is only rated for 80hp, and the transom is in need of replacement. Looks like someone did a 6" paint brush job on it. There are enough blemishes in the fiberglass that a full restoration would be required. The good news is a decent list:
The trim is all there. The original seats are missing. The emblems are there and in excellent shape. The fiber glass stringer system is very impressive. I have been warned that they may be paper thin...not the case. They are extremely heavy and solid. The flooring is there in pieces that I can use as a template. The trailer is actually nicer than my American, a very heavy duty Shoreline in excellent shape.
The lines on this boat are better in person. It is really sexy. I can imagine what the inboard version must look like!
I will get this cleaned out and scrubbed a bit, and then likely take it to the farm for winter keeping. Once we are done with Alaina's Larson I may bring this back up to work on it. I think it'll be a keeper. Skagit3.jpg

A nice read of your road trip, I trust your daughter handled the trailer just fine under your guidance, I can relate.

I look forward to "The Rest Of The Story"

This craft has a visual character built in to her unlike many others!!!

She did fine driving, and even backing the trailers up. She is making good progress. I find she does best when I get out of the truck when she backs up. You just have to do it and get a feel for it. It gets confusing with Dad sitting there telling her what to do:)
Eddie, I have tried numerous times to join that club/forum as it seems a hot spot for Skagit action. However, I can't seem to get activated!

Does anyone know what these things are for? I assume something adjustable clamped down there, but what? Skagit16.jpg

I'd go with pendant / flag rod mounts.

Looks like the hole is threaded.

Oh no, that old boat is in way too good of condition to scrap. That's a restorers dream. Start with a good hull and go from there. Now what would be cool is to actually try to find a period correct motor for it. If you could find a really old Merc like what he took off of it and put it on there. Oh wow, that would be so neat. But then you'd have to find you a period correct 1960 truck to pull it with. The snowball rolls down hill very quickly.

I found this information for you. You might be able to find some use in this. It includes original Skagit brochures from the 1950's!

Very nice tow rig! I think the Skagit will be a full project. I will take the deck off and flip the hull and then figure out how to get the paintbrushed paint off.
I am pleased that every piece of trim is there and in great shape!
I have a 1975 85hp Evinrude that is a solid motor and plan to use that for now. I fear I have pushed my luck with my very understanding wife...we have gone from none to 6 to 5 boats over the last year...
As I have no ID tag in the Skagit listing hp rating or passenger limits, I thought I might make a custom wrap-around seating arena and use it for 2 family cruising. It is a very deep and wide boat, and I see no reason it wouldn't safely carry 6-8 people.

In the link that Waterinthefuel provided it shows the 1958 17' Express model is rated for 3 to 6 people with 80 hp max.

Back then the rating was 150 lbs per person, so you are looking at 900 lbs capacity IMO.

Heavily modifying the interior w additional seating area will probably add weight, which would then further reduce the 900lbs of people capacity.

The capacity is for either 6ppl or 900lbs of people which ever maxes out 1st.

So 3 300lb fellas would be the max as would 5 50lb kids and 1 200lb adult.

Also remember that in 1958, outboards were crank rated, after 1982+/- they became prop rated. A 1975 85hp wouldnt be a hazardous overpower, IMO, but in some states, overpowering is expressly or generally prohibited. So be aware of the rules and regulations were you boat.
