Skanky Beast II

So I have been working on aquiring another project hull this week. It is a 17-18 foot Santana runabout, that has no outboard, no interior except carpet, and is on a trailer. The floor seems pretty solid, but I will go into it assuming it will need the full meal deal. It is a conventional hull with maybe mid to low teens deadrise, which means it will plane out easier. It is ripe for a center console conversion. What I will do this time is remove the upper section, and eliminate it alotgether. This will create a lower profile, and look more clean. I will then glass in the casting deck, and build up a center console. There are several things I want to do differently.

Since I won't be in a hurry because I already have a functioning boat, I can take my time with this one, and do things the way I want to. The main goal is to have a more finished end result with less compromise. Another goal is less weight. Skanky Beast has grown fat and heavy with add-ons, something I should have taken into account for when building it originally. SB 2 will either use my Merc 1250, or more likely use another motor that I will aquire (I am working on getting an Evinrude 150 hp outboard). If none of this pans out, I may tear SB 1 down over the winter, essentially doing the same thing as described for SB 2, with the goal of lower profile, less weight, more finished appearance.

The Santana was spotted sitting in the driveway of a house in the boonies with a Make Offer sign on it. It still has all the guages, Merc control box, Merc power T/T pump with hoses, and a decent but a bit rusty trailer. I left a note offering $100. I did this because there was another sign laying in the boat asking $500 OBO. My thoughts are, if it didn't go then, $100 isn't a bad amount to offer. I'd probably go higher, but why not start low? Needless to say, I got no call, so yesterday I stopped again, and left another note stating my interest. If I get no response in the next few weeks, I'll simply give up. Of course, I do have my ever vigilant eye open for another, but this one was perfect.

First off, it is white, and the gel was in decent condition. Another thing is the transom cutout went all the way across, which means I could just mount my kicker directly to the transom and skip the kicker mount. Due to the lesser deadrise, the cutout sets higher from the waterline, which means I could eliminate the splashwell altogether, which equals more room and less weight. Anyway, none of it matters if the dude doesn't call. Wish me luck...

I would like an aluminum hull, but someone has to die and will you one around here. 12 foot aluminum skiffs with 9 horse motors fetch $2000 here, so I think I'll just stick with 'glass (unless something comes along of course :) )....

Re: Skanky Beast II

JasonJ, if that falls through, I've got a beautiful 67 thunderbird hull that is dying for your kind of attention. Been looking to sell it for the trailer, but haven't really tried very hard because I've been thinking of stealing some of the stuff off of it. 21' long. It's yours if you want it. I'd about give it to you just to see her restored, and I'd run it up there just to see SB 1. :)

Jason,
It is addictive, ain't it??? My wife wants me to get started on Starcraft #3 and we just splashed #2 at the beginning of the month! The guy who bought #1 loves it and has been running all over the River with it this summer.
I'm going to an auction this weekend that looks to have a half dozen boats in it. Could be interesting....

- Scott

It is addictive, Between that and my ever increasing collection of outboard motors, I swear I will need to go on meds to get it under control.

Swimmin' I am not familiar with the 67 T-Bird hull, what does it look like?

Bro,
I don't know about your neighborhood, but around here, you're looking at a free boat. Or, one that people finally have to pay a few bucks to make it disappear from the far corner of their back yard.

The last 2 Al. hull day crusiers I got, one a 19', the other a 21', I paid $500 for each.

Both hulls & trailers were sound. One had a bunch of machining work already done on the engine--- that was laying in pieces in the floor.
The other was freshly painted, but had sat with rain water up over the engine for about 2 years.

These were hulls, on trailers, that if you cut up the boat and sold it for scrap would bring $275-- back in the 90's...... And you'd still have all the parts for a rebuildable Mercruiser 120 & the trailer.

If you're still looking for a Al. hull,,, don't get desperate. Just keep the word out, and one will turn up.

Sure, you may have to take a road trip to bring it home, but it will be a worthwhile trip when you find the right one.

In fact,,, there may be a real deal on a freshly restored (low time)1968 Cherokee 21'er coming up around here.

I don't know what the deal is with the dude selling that Santana, I have still heard nothing, and when I drove by today, it was pulled back onto his yard. He must have some over-inflated sense of worth on this thing, or does not know how to sell anything. The beauty is, there is always another hull around, I see them all the time.

Re: Skanky Beast II

Jason, that thunderbird is a cathedral hull. Sheesh, I don't even know how to explain it, and I still never have managed to post a picture. It's wide. Maybe 7 1/2 feet wide. 21 feet long. Shoot me an email and I'll send you a picture and every bit of information I can think up. My email addy is in my profile under homepage. As for aluminum boats, try craigslist.com, go to Seattle for a city, and you'll see them for decent prices up here. I've bought 2 boats off of there, and picked up a free aluminum one...thought you oughta see it now.

JasonJ, think of the ranger's boat in the old television program "Flipper." If I'm not mistaken that was a Thunderbird. Thunderbird was a maker of very high quality boats.

Goatherder, who used to be hayhauler but who lost all of that in the harddrive crash of '05.

Re: Skanky Beast II

The ones I've seen were super boats. A cathedral hull is a type of tri-hull, very stable. I'm guessing it will be a cuddy cabin or a bow rider, at that length. Hard to beat the price. It sounds like it may be a bigger boat than Jason needs for fishing, but only Jason can make that decision.

Re: Skanky Beast II

I have recieved a few pics from Swimmin' and the boat he has bears little if any resemblance to the Flipper boat. It looks more like a lowslung speed boat, very little tri-hullishness to it.

tbirdsideview.jpg

The way the hull looks, it is pretty ripe for a Center Console conversion, but I would have to see more to decide for sure. 21 feet is a bit big, but it would give me more casting deck, and handle the big lake a bit better. More to follow....

Yeah, I wasn't thinking the length would hurt you. I was thinking of the freeboard of the "Flipper" boat. Whatever you do I look forward to seeing it.

I posted the above before seeing the picture. From what I can see it would appear that you could do something with that. If you decide to I'll bet it will look and work great.
