Re: skeg broke off

Though it can give some steering and skid help, the main purpose of the skeg is to protect the prop from bottom strikes.

Try a SkegGard.

Had and old Johnson 115 with a broken skeg, actually it pretty much had no skeg, and that thing would slide out of control if you turned just a little too sharp, almost through me out of the boat the first time it happened. Depending on how much of it is gone, it's not that big of a fix, most marine stores will sell a replacement skeg, then you just have to get it welded on.

If you hit something hard enough to break the skeg off, something took one hell of a bang. What size engine are you dealing with here?

Re: skeg broke off

Breaking a skeg off in that manner put's a lot of strain on every thing, gearcase, exhaust hous. Engine mounts, steering bracket, and mounting brackets. The boat transom wound'nt like that either. I would look that engine, and boat over very carefully. You could have trouble snapping drive shaft's down the line, as I would think the exhaust hous. could very well be sprung.
