i looked at a boat today with a mariner motor. i noticed half of the skeg was missing on the lower unit and the prop was dinged up. what would the odds be with a possible damaged shaft?

Re: skeg question

2:1 according to my bookie.

Kidding aside, sometimes shafts bend, sometimes they don't. It needs to be checked.

Re: skeg question

A quasi suitable test would be for you to remove the prop and using a dial or digital vernier caliper (Harbor Freight has them for $10 or so) set the caliper up between the end of the prop shaft and the driveway surface if concrete (hard, non moving surface). Have a friend slowly rotate the shaft with a pair of pliers. I'd say any variation would be undesirable.
