Ski Locker cover question

I am going to build a ski locker cover. My question is can I just use 1x3's and get them glassed, or do I have to use teak wood. I want to do the slot style.' Thanks

It was worth it just to have that drop-in aluminum trim ring!

I actually have the aluminum ring, the cover was carpeted over plywood and carpet got ripped up and I like the slat style so all I really need is to put together the wood. Just wondering how some of you guys built yours.
