I have a new project,a little boston whaler clone skiff that measures 100"(8'4").The transom was rotted and termite eaten to about 5" down from the top.I cut out a clean line past the rot with a router set to the correct depth to stop just shy of the the hull and after the cut, busted out the old wood.I scribed in a new piece of hard maple(because I had it,if you were wondering why maple)I then used PL polyurithane glue and about 12 clamps to glue the maple to the transom. The next day I used bondo to fill the voids and flatten out the rear, followed by coats of polyurithane finish (zar)
the transom height was only 12 1/2 inches and I needed close to 15 for my OB so I devised a mahogany/aluminum jack plate.I took a piece of mahogany 3/4" and ripped another piece 1/4" and glued it to the first with Gorilla glue(Amazingly stong stuff if you have never tried it)to get a piece 1" thick.I then countersunk screws through the mahogany into the maple with a good layer of Gorilla glue there too.screw holes filled with famowood and sandedsmooth and the whole thing finished with several coats of poly.
The aluminum is 1/4" plate and is through bolted with SS bolts.Bottom bolts are filled with 5200 in holes washers etc and all wiped smooth with laquer thinner.Finished height of transom with jack plate is 14 3/4".
I am pretty excited about this little boat which will be a throw it in the back of the truck and go boat.I am going to do mahogany rails next and then a bait tank and rod holders for So Cal saltwater bay fishing.I may add transom wheels but I havent found any yet.
