Got the first lizard of the season the other night and my neighbor said we should use a compressor to help with the skinning process. So we slit a wrist and pumped air into it then the next wrist and so on. Well it helped at first but about 1/3 way through it was back to skinning a usual. What a pain. Anyway does anyone know how to make this process any easier?

Re: Skinning an alligator with air compressor

Hi Cook. I don't hunt gator myself (except on the football field. Go Noles!), but I do know the method you're talking about, it's also one of the tricks to getting the perfect crispy skin on Peking Duck. I suspect you need a pretty stout compressor and a fair bit of practice to find the "sweet spot" to insert the nozzle in order to get the skin to separate cleanly. You may even have to insert it in multiple locations, but that may ruin the hide. Then again, they are living dinosaurs and thought as nails as you and I know, so it may be quicker, cheaper, easier to just get a good sharp knife and have at it.

One of my wife's clients in the web business is an Alligator outfitter who takes quite a few celebs hunting for the big lizards and skinning them with air is exactly the way they do it.
