Re: sleeves?

The most I know is that the old one's pressed out and the new one's pressed in. Haven't read a whole lot about it on here describing the process.

Re: sleeves?

There are a couple of different styles of block & sleeve combos. One is a cast in sleeve. That has to be cut out with a boring bar or in a mill. The other is a pressed in sleeve. Those can be cut out or you can heat the block and pull them out.

In either case the block has to be heated and/or the sleeve made cold. Then its a press in deal. Some sleeves need the ports cut in. Most times the block will get decked.

It's a bit more involved but thats the general idea. Are you thinking about a block in particular or just wondering in general?

Re: sleeves?

i just got the block stripped down on a '79 evinrude 85 that needs work on one cylinder and i was exploring the options for repair. it has one nice deep gouge in the wall where a ring let go and it needs at least bored out. just curious if resleeving is an option if the gouge is to deep to be resolved by boring.

Re: sleeves?

It may or may not be. Most times it is cheaper than another block.

Before we go any further lets verify what you have. There's a big difference between a 1978 85 and a 1979 85.

Your 1979 should be 3 1/2" bore. If its 3 3/8" then its a 78 or earlier.

Re: sleeves?

You can call around and check on the price to resleeve your motor. You might want to check around for a used block, ebay has them often.
I have had no trouble finding V-4 crossflow blocks. You should be able to find one for around $200.00 or so. Having it bored runs around $40.00- ? a hole .
I found one and had it bored at same place for $400.00, total. Do a search for outboard engine blocks, or just contact some of the parts stores. Thats how I found the block mentioned.

:) :) Good - Luck,
KYHunter
