Any ideas on how to attach a slide hammer to a drive shaft that is stuck in the crank shaft? The lower unit was removed, drive shaft stayed in the crank shaft. Impeller key broke thru impeller housing...

Thanks!

The only time I've seen it done is to carefully drill a hole in the end of the driveshaft and tap it for a bolt that will fit in the puller. Tricky to do on an upside down motor.....

I would soak (upside down) in a 50:50 mix of acetone and ATF for two or three days. Wouldn't use a slide hammer.

Think the slide hamer will ruin the crank in one blow. The ATF in acetown above will help a lot if the motor is upside down. After a few days of that I would turn it right side up and get some one to pull down hard on the shaft while you vibrate the end of the shaft with an air tool. That might help for a second round of ATF.

Clamp a vise grip on the D/S (not in a seal area) and hang it upside down with a chain to the vise grips and a hoist about 4" off of the floor. Put some boat cushions under the mtr, use the atf/act and let it soak. Every so often give the mtr a few raps in the down position. Patience!!!

I will give it a try when I have some guys to take the motor off for me. I was trying to avoid having to take the motor off the boat. Thanks for the advice!

Congrats on getting the motor fixed.

Just to follow up on this topic, tx191 is correct. A slide hammer is VERY effective and will not ruin the crank or bearings(unless they are already shot). Solid cobalt bits in 3 steps tap to 1/4-20, need about 5 turns with a grade 8 bolt.

If it doesn't come off with 4 or 5 pulls, then also hammer a few INTO crank. Your just trying break/shock the bond.

The slide hammer rod can also often be welded to the drive shaft(non seal area, then ground), but requires special welding techniques and materials.

ATF/Acetone is one of the few penetrating oils that sometimes works in a salt water marine environment...but Ketones don't get along with some seal materials. Probably, the saving grace here, is acetone tends to flash off fairly quickly.

I have been soaking the crank splines in acetone-atf to clean them. I hope that is not a problem... Almost free of all corrosion...
