1983 Merc 470 2bbl. I have fresh Mobil 1 20w-50 in the motor. I have set the idle down to 600rpm for the purpose of trolling. I have a slight lifter noise at idle. How critical would this be? Could this be brought on by the low idle? Should I go in and try to adjust the noise out of it?

Same as my 470, I do not worry about it. Since the 470 lifters are non adjustable there is not much that can be done anyway.

Terry,
This is not a very noticeable noise and you have to listen closely but it is there. I thought it might be piston slap at first. Anyway it runs fine.

Yeah with the non adjustable lifters I don't think it is anything to worry about.

....with a near-to-thirty year old engine, low idling speed and, assuming, cool running engine, I would suspect relatively low oil pressure thus lazy lifters.
The next time you change oil, try a straight 30 weight similar to Rotella....works for us!!!
