slight oil leak

Well guys. I have my motor all put back together and ran it in a large barrel and thought it was all set. I noticed now one drip of oil seepage from the lower unit on my driveway. It leaked out from the seam where the lower unit gear box is connected to the exhaust leg. Evinrude model #53933 1962 40 h.p. I have a new "O" ring between the two pieces and also some permatex sealer between the pieces, but I still got the drop of oil that came out. I'm sure of where it came from (the seam) because there is a tell tale sign of oil that dripped from there. QUESTION: I covered the outside with sealer now hoping that will seal the tiny leak. (seepage is more like it) or do I need to take the thing all apart again and maybe tightem the long long bolts that are connecting the two pieces or perhaps add additional sealer between the two pieces (gear box/exhaust leg). Thanks.

Re: slight oil leak

Are you sure it's gear oil and not exhaust residue?

If it is gear oil, you'll never seal it from the outside.

Re: slight oil leak

Is this unburned fuel-oil mix leaking from the drain holes between the lower unit and midsection? If so it is normal, and the drain holes should not be sealed.

Re: slight oil leak

It is definately oil from the lower unit (gear lube) not fuel / oil mix. It is the same color as the gear oil that I put in the gear box, and one small drop. I agree that I will never seal it from the outside. I can PROBABLY tighten up on the long studs that have nuts at the ends that I can get to by just taking the exhaust leg cover off, however, I am trying to find out the proper torque on these nuts so I do not snap the long studs. If I did that, I would cause a big problem and have to get them burned out or someting like that. I have a service manual that does not mention a word about torque. Can anyone tell me the torque on these nuts? If I tighten them a bit, I think the tiny leak I have will stop. I removed the studs when I tore the motor apart, and they were very tight to get out. Maybe not tight enough now. That would draw the seam together more I would think. Any thoughts on this?

No, it is not coming from the drain holes. It is definately seeping right from the seam of the gear box and the bottom of the exhaust leg, right where the metal of each of these two parts meet. I used a light film of sealer on the gear box before I joined the two parts, and maybe I should not have used any sealer. It was a VERY THIN coating of sealer put on with my finger.
