Slinger installed inside pump housing

I recently replaced the water pump on my 1991 150 Mariner. I installed the slinger inside the "groove" in the upper housing. I've since read the slinger is supposed to go on top of the housing. Will the pump fail if I leave it this way, or do I need to pull the lower unit and change the slinger location?

Gee, I would think the slinger would distort the upper pump housing over time. It might even crack the upper case. There is also a groove which helps the pump prime. Maybe the slinger cloggs this?

I would pull the gearcase and fix it.

I pulled the lower unit today and installed the slinger on top of the housing. Not sure why, but the old water pump didn't have a slinger. Thanks for your response.

I've owned this motor since new in 91. The water pump was replaced by a dealer in Wisconsin about 12 years ago - went out while on vacation - so they left the slinger out. It wasn't difficult, other than lining up the coupler for the shifter when reinstalling the lower unit, so I think I'll replace it more often to avoid a failure.
