I have a 75 johnson sea horse. Today when I went out it ran fine until I tried t go fast and just before it would start to plain it would like slip out of gear and rev up. I would let off the throtle a little and it would start to go again. this would happen at about 4000RPM. I need help.

Re: Sliping out of gear

if it just started to rev, you spun a prop. if it was a clunk, like you hit something, could be bad clutch dog. the prop is made up of 2 metal hubs with a rubber bushing in between. when this rubber dries out. it slips. it can be repaired at prop show or buy new or used.

Well i thought that it might have been the prop. but it runs fine sept when I try to go fast. It dose it every time would the prop still turn at lower speeds if it was spun?

Does it actually come out of gear or does it just just rev up and go no where? Sometimes the prop will only start to slip under high load like planing.

Whet you described is the classic signs of a spun prop hub. Going slow there isn't much of a load on it. Speed up and it slips. Get it rehubbed and it will work fine.

if you're not getting a bang. thunk. it's the prop. it's like the clutch is slipping on a manual transmission car.

I dont think theres any bang or anything when it happens, how loud would it be if there was.

If it was the clutch (rounded corners on the shifter dogs) it would bang like you had hit a firewood log floating in the water. Thats because it will jump over the rounded dog shoulder and then tempotarily catch on the next one. Under load it will realy bang. Yours sounds like the prop hub to me. A lot easier fix. I had the dog problem which as usually caused by shifting at too high rpm or not making quick positive shifts.
