Re: Slippage under load

Bondo, I certainly can't edumacate you... :) Your knowledge is far greater than mine......I'm not sure what (if any) difference there is between drives that say "888" on them as opposed to "R",MR, or Model 1, other than the castings look different from the outside.......I have seen in the past that the drives with the "888" designation fail when installed behind a Chevy 350 (260 H.P.).....It may have been that these drives had problems to begin with, but ran fine coupled to engines that ran with less H.P. & W.O.T......It's just from my personal observations that they didn't fare well....I haven't dealt with hundreds or thousands of them so I might be wrong... So, if I am wrong, I stand corrected.....Boatrider, you should have a look at your bellows before you install a new drive & put it in the water....If you had the water intrusion into your drive for an extended period, your gimbal bearing is probably bad.....If you looked at the link Bondo posted, you will see that there is likely more to be done than just throw a new drive on...Once you take the drive off you will ned to inspect the parts that Don S. has mentioned...If you can post a pic with the drive off, it would be helpful....Your engine runs well....I still can't believe that your boat moved any faster than idle! :) You are in the right place to seek help if you are truly a "DIY"...Good Luck & welcome to the "wonderful world of boating :D .....JK

"888" on them as opposed to "R",MR, or Model 1,
What I've been able to decipher is that,.......

The MR Is an Alpha drive,......(smooth squareish case)

The R,... Model 1,+ the 888 are the Same drive,......(with the "lifting eye" on the top case)

Just that the 888 was used behind the Ford power plants..........I've been Told that there's an 1/8th" difference in the Cases,........
But,........ I haven't been able to Find it............

All 3 are the Older sytle with the bearing Pre-load Pin in the Vert. shaft........

That Said,........... the SBC 260hp was installed in front of Many of the old Pre-Alpha drives.............

BTW,........ In My experince,.....
Most outdrive Failures are caused by,......
1) Impact with Realestate...........
2) Lack of Maintenance................
3) Lack of Control over the Driver's Right Hand...................... ;)

Re: Slippage under load

I am still trying to get this replacement drive, and have got another possibility if this one don't work out. I don't know details yet, but I know this guy who has a Mercruiser drive for a V8 - he's checking on the model for me. I am curious as to whether you can replace an alpha one with an alpha two or a bravo? Is this possible if you replace everything including the gimbal? Just curious. Thanks again.

Re: Slippage under load

No, you would need to change everything......Get yourself an Alpha 1, Gen 1 with a 1.5:1 ratio & be done with it.... ;) ....You can buy a brand new aftermarke on ebay for $1,200 shipped....Unless you can come up with a drive that meets the requirements stated above at a cheaper price, this is the way to go ..... :) ...JK

Ayuh,.......... Medoc is On It,.........

You'd have to Change Everything from the Rear Motor Mounts Back,.....
Complete,.. inner,+ Outer Transom Assembley,+ the Outdrive..........
Big Buck$ with Little or No Pay-Off$.............. ;)

I Glad all of you guys Don't Like the PreAlphas,............... I can buy them for Next to Nothing,........
And,........
Other than How the vertical shaft bearing is Loaded,..........
There's Little or No Differences..............
Actually,........ Most of the Gears,+ Bearings are a Direct Interchange....... Same Part #s.......... ;)

BTW,......The Complete Outdrives are Also Direct Interchange Units....................
