Well, some of you may have noticed I've been missing for a few days. This is why:

My husband and I took our son-in-law, his father and brother and our grandson out fishing on Sunday. We waiting until the rain stopped and the storms passed.

When we returned to our boat slip and landed the boat, I stepped off the bow with one foot and slipped on the wet dock. My other foot got caught up in the bow rail. I did the splits, twisted my knee and had to have someone on the boat untangle my leg from the rail. One of the most un-ladylike positions I've ever been in. I couldn't get up and the pain was incredible in my knee and groin (I think ladies have groins, but you get the idea). A perfectly good day of fishing gone to hell in a handbasket.

Anyway, I went to the doctors yesterday and his diagnoses was a torn or severed exterier menicus(sp)(cartilage) and a severe sprain on the inside of my knee. Today I have an appointment for an MRI to determine whether surgery will take care of the problem and if there is any ligament damage. So I'm off for a few days on crutches.

I really get mad at myself when I do stupid things like this. I have no idea how long I will be laid up. :(

LadyFish----I am terribly sorry to hear about your injuries and wish you the speediest of recoveries. But I would also like to say that I don't think you did anything stupid.ACCIDENTS HAPPEN!!!!My own personal was falling down the last three steps into the corner of the basement wall.Minor rotator cuff and collarbone bruise. The kicker here is that I had been going up and down those steps for 16 years!!!!!STUFF HAPPENS so please don't blame yourself.

Must be the legs, eh?

I started the month on crutches, they stink. But soon enough one is back to normal.

(don't know if you got the crutches 101 lesson but the trick is to pivot on them - not hop - and to take your weight on your hands and forearms - not in your armpits.)

Here's hoping you don't have any flat tires meanwhile, Bobber head.

PS. ...and No!, I wasn't doing the splits either. Simply tore up some of the ankle bone linkage from this big heavy thing bombing me.

Re: Slipped Up

Thanks everyone. Bobber, I guess this is what I get for making fun of your legs. :D

I had my MRI yesterday and should get the results in a day or two. They said my PCL was intact but not to sure about the ACL. The Menicus didn't look to good either but this guy is not a diagnostician so I'll wait to get the true results from my doctor. He told me that the cartilage after your 30's is incapable of healing itself and would more than likely require some type of surgery. For now, I'm taking Tremorol for the pain it really helps me sleep better.

This may be the only time I don't like living on the water. Our house is on pilings which means 13 steps to get in the front door. Not an easy thing for me right now. I did get lessons on the crutches. I was doing it all wrong and had them set too high. At first it was quite the balancing act but I'm really trucking with them now.

Magster, did you have surgery? If so what kind? And, what is the recovery time? From the way this feel I don't think it will heal on its own. And, the doc told me if I don't have something done to it now, I would be looking at knee replacement down the road.

Some good has come out of all this. I'm being waited on hand and foot, no cooking, no yard work, no laundry and, I don't even have to attend my own board meeting today. :D

Re: Slipped Up

Hi LadyFish,
I have had a couple knee surgeries. They did a scope on it first to survey the damage as they could not tell if the ACL was intact either. During the scope they cleaned up the miniscus pretty well and found that the ACL had completely ruptured. The second surgery replaced the ACL with my patella tendon. This was back in 1988 and it took only a week to recover from the scope and about 6 weeks after the ACL...but I was much younger then!! My mother had her knee replaced (darn weak knee'd family) last year and she was up walking the next day, amazing what they do nowadays. She was fully recovered in 6 weeks. Either way it goes for you, good luck and godspeed.

Re: Slipped Up

Thanks for the support guys. I received the results of the MRi today. The PCL is intact, the menicus (cartilage) looks okay but they cant find the whole ACL. I am being referred to a orthopedic surgeon for futher study. Okay, now my next question is, where the heck is my patella tendon. And, what I am looking at for recovery time if I have to have surgery? :(

Re: Slipped Up

The patella tendon connects the kneecap to the tibia bone.Sorry to hear about your fall. All will be well.It just takes a little healing time.I don't fall often because now that I'm not 25 anymore I have to think about little moves that use to come naturally. ;)

Here's some reading web page

Re: Slipped Up

Ladyfish, I had a (this is a while ago now...) hyper-extended something in the inside of me knee. It allowed my knee to bend inward instead of back. I was off work for 4 months and it has never been 100% since.

Re: Slipped Up

Funny, crutches became second nature really fast for me and several times I paused wondering why this person would be standing there holding the door open for me until I realized "Oh yeah...I am on crutches."

Was warned that after a few days I would feel much better but to continue using the crutches if I had any hopes of recovery and to follow through with the therpy.

So I did and am.

I bumped the back of my heel, very minor event, a few days ago, but went down anyway and almost cried. (Yeah big baby, I know)...my point is I get a sense of urgency on your part and am wondering if the lesson here, as all things in life are a repeated lesson until we learn it, is to "slow down?"

Maybe I am just projecting.....bobber

PS I don't feel bad at all for taking a cheap shot at you while your down......I hope you feel the same towards me......fish on. :D

Re: Slipped Up

Just thought I'd chime in quickly. My wife her knee scoped last year(she's 42). Had some meniscus cleaned up and a general overhaul/cleaning of something else that was torn, it was not the ACL though. She was layed up for about three days and then was good to go. Maybe a little slower for the first week but overall it was a very easy recovery. The ACL is a bit of a different story but still only a week or two. You should be fine by mid July either way and out enjoying the summer. Here's hoping so!!
When you find out what they want to do post it on the "outboard" board. I bet some of those guys could fix you up and give you a good deal!!!
Best of Luck!

Re: Slipped Up

My wife tore her ACL while snowskiing one year. Her surgery had to wait til our 3rd daughter was born (yes - she was skiing while preggers - but that's just HER...)

Anyway - the Patella tendon, as mentioned - connects the kneecap to the leg... And generally, they'll take a portion of the patella to replace the ACL.

Dr. told her 6 months before strenuous activity (skiiing, soccer, softball, etc) - but her motivation was that we had already paid for another ski trip... So - you guess it... She was up & skiing again within 5 weeks of surgery. But her heroes have been hockey players... During the Stanley Cup playoffs, they'll have an ACL surgery one day, and play on the darned thing the next day... No wonder they get the big bucks while they're young... they won't be able to walk after they're 40.

G'Luck - and a speedy recovery!

Rex S.

Hey Ladyfish I too am sorry to hear of your injury. I think the best post on this has been Crab Bait's. How does that saying go....when life hands you lemons .....make lemon aid. I guess I have had to live that little saying a few times life has handed me quite a bit of lemons but things always seem to work out for the best. Your in my prayers for a fast and painless recovery.
