Slipping prop?

I had my boat out last weekend, it has a 1978 johnson 140 hp. when i tried to pull someone, i went full throttle. the boat started off ok but then the rpms would just rev way up, like pushing in a clutch while still on the gas. I eased into and it would run better. I am new to boating, does that mean my prop is slipping and if so what do i need to do to fix it.

when i run wot it has now power. If i am in the boat myself it will eventually palne out, but still not the power it once had. If it is me and one of my kids in the boat, it will not move fast at all, and never palne out.

Sounds like the hub is slipping. Mark it to the prop, take it for a spin and see if it has moved. Sure way to find out. Commonly called a "spun prop" if I am not mistaken.
