Sloppy/stiff steering (video)....

I hate to add another thread about steering, but since this is the first time I've really started messing with the steering on a boat, I really need some help.

95 Mariah 350 Merc Alpha 1.

I got the boat last year and it had a lot of play in the steering as well as being fairly stiff. I figured it was the cable.

Well today, I started digging around, as well as reading this thread:

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=536697

I followed achris's instructions on thread #11. Steering feels the same at the wheel with the engine off, except there is even more play. The drive swings freely in both directions.

Before I did that though, I had a neighbor more the wheel back and forth while I looked at everything. The play seems to coming mostly from the cable itself. When he jiggles the wheel, I can hear and feel the cable making noise inside it's covering where it makes the bend at the transform. But when he moves from lock to lock, this is what I see.

Sorry for the bad quality, just grabbed my cell phone for the video. You can actually hear the slop on the cable. That just doesn't look right to me, and I wanted to let you guys tell me what you think.

I'm afraid the cylinder needs to be replaced, and most likely the cable as well, but before I go buy $800 worth of parts, I want to make damn sure that's the problem.

I'm going to disconnect the steering coupler next.

Thanks,
Steve

I removed the "A" pin per the diagram in post #7 of that link and the steering wheel is as smooth as butter. Still haven't found the source of the slop though. Is there a cable adjustment?

Could be where that steering arm pinch bolts to the Gimbal Ring.

Re: Sloppy/stiff steering (video)....

My wife just got home from work and I had her move the wheel back and forth while I looked at everything. The cable is where the play is coming from. Is it possible that it's coming from the steering wheel itself?

So, it seems that the stiff steering is coming from the ram. I may try to hold off on replacing that for another season. I really don't want to spend $700 right now unless I have to. But I would like to get the slop in the wheel taken care of.

Any help would be appreciated.

I was afraid that was it, but now that I found the slop in the cable, I'm confident that's not it.

Thanks,

Ayuh,.... Try that again, only have her shake the Drive, insteada the steerin' wheel....

If yer convinced it's the cable,.... Buy the Helm/ Cable as a package, it's way Cheaper....
The length should be printed within a foot or so from 1 end, or the other,...
For the Helm, match what ya got, rack for rack, or rotary for rotary...

I am, because I had also disconnected the cable at the PS ram and had her move the wheel. Thanks for the tip, I'll order one tomorrow.

One more question, as far as the ram causing my stiff steering, is there any danger to running it for another season? It's not "that" stiff, but definitely not like it should. But right now with that on top of the slop in the steering, it's not a whole lot of fun.

Thanks again,
Steve

Ayuh,.... My guess is, you'll find abit of corrosion inside the aluminum mounting tube,...
Clean it out real good, 'n grease the new cable goin' in....

I definitely will, but the wheel moves smooth and free when disconnected.

What'd you think of my video?

Well, now I'm not so sure. I just went outside and moved the drive back and forth by hand, it has an inch or two of play from side to side. That should be rock solid, right?

I know for a fact that there is play in the steering cable. Like I said, the cable was detached and I was holding it with my hand while my wife moved the wheel.

Bond-o, I got my wife out there again and had her shake the drive. First of all, the drive moves just less than 1" side to side. From the inside, everything is moving, including the cable, yet the wheel isn't budging.

Let me know what you think. Again, I appreciate your help.

When you replace that helm, make darn sure you have all the fasteners tight! Some are tough to get at. Especially with that dashboard they used!

I forgot to mention that once I found it was the cable, I crawled under the dash and found 4 main bolts holding the rack and pinion together were loose, like hand tight loose. I tightened them up and it helped, but not by much.

Is it possible to take the rack and pinion apart to see if I can find something that came loose?
