You need to tighten the packing nut. Its the long threaded tube with the hexnut end that the jet goes through. If that's tightened as much as you can then you need more packing.

Hi wayne I fguired it out I forgot to get the old packing nuts out, good as new now with the new ones in, runs good but really smokey, which is a good thing I hope, I also had another problem this morning, the prop would not turn when I tryed, it was stuck, I drained the gear case oil, and what I saw was bad the oil that was there, was like white yougurt, and very thick, I drained it all and even blew air into it with the compressor, all is good now I put in new oil and the prop runs freely.

Your lower unit is leaking. You need to reseal it. That "yogurt" is emulisified oil and water.

At 24:1 it will be smokey. That's why I use synthetic oil (Amsoil). Almost no smoke or oily sheen.

Aren't old outboards fun?

I suggest you order the lower unit seals from your local OMC dealer or buy one of the gearcase seal kits found on the internet. I don't have the parts manual for the 1958 18 hp so I can't help you with the part numbers. If you bring the seals and lower unit to my place in Hamilton I'll help you install them - no charge.

You will need a bearing puller, tap and bolt or tapered rod to remove the shiftshaft seal, some blue Permatex silicone, fresh gear lube, cleaning solvent, putty knife, utility knife, a jig to hold the lower unit and patience.

The parts are mostly o-rings and washers. There are two stubborn oil seals and a spaghetti seal that needs to be installed with some silicone. Its not that hard, but it can be a pain.

does it need to be replace right away I am going on holidays next week and want to bring the motor, but now I am stuck with no experiance with seals, probably can not bring the motor now, because of the gear case seal.

Take it with you. Just keep a close eye on the gear oil. I'd check it after each outing. Let it sit for an hour or so before you check the oil. Any free water or emulsion should come out the drain hole first. If there is only a little water or emulsion then just keep topping up the oil until you get home.

what if I put a little bit of clear marine silicone all the way around the seal on the outside against the seal.
