just replaced the waterpump on my 89 johnson 120hp. replaced it due to overheating problems last time i used it. now when i start the motor it has a strong telltale from the motor but it takes almost a full minute before any water comes out. dropped lower unit again to make sure the impellor was not installed backwards just to be sure. is this normal. did not pay any attention to how it worked before i changed it. just noticed that some of the other boats appear different. also what would cause one bank to be signifantly warmer than the other. my manual does not mention if there is a thermostat that could cause this problem

You almost said it.

I understand it as the telltale comes fine immediately but the main cooling water in the exhaust hesitates? At the same time, part of the motor gets insufficient cooling?

Something prevents the water from circulating. Look for thermostat/pressure regulator and obsticles in the water jacket.

Do not allow the motor to overheat as it will easily be damaged by it.

no when i start the motor no water comes out for almost a minute but then comes out strong but not in a shooting stream more like a garden hose

Even if the mentioned parts works OK, a certain time for the water to show is quite normal. Maybe not a full minute, but awaiting it nervously make time seem to stand still. One good thing is, that you know the impeller is submerged (=doesn't suffer from running dry).

Another problem is the part of motor getting too hot.

I'd still do the mentioned tasks and with a little luck find something in there, which could even improve the tell tale hesitation.

was playing arpund with it today and found the thermostats, i changed the left and right stats and the overheating problem changed sides also so i think i will order a pair o t-stats also blew some compressed air up through the hoses to make sure everthing was clear. will let you know if this works when the t-stats get here. thanx for the help.
