Hi Everyone,

This board has been so helpful. Thanks for all the advice thus far. I have a 1994 70hp Force on a 16ft fiberglass bowrider. Motor is running great, idles at 7-800 rpm, and top speed is around 40mph at roughly 5100-5200rpm. It is a real dog to plane however. What is the proper pitch of prop for this motor and anything else I should be checking? Thanks again in advance.

Re: Slow To Plane Out

What kind of load were you carrying? When you say "dog to plane" do you mean its just a little slow to plane or do you mean it seems like it won't plane.
Hole shot depends on number of things.Careful weight distribution.motor trim, load, prop pitch/design.Motor height.
At 5,200 rpm my guess is you are pretty close to the max reccomended. And the prop is close as well.If the motor has power trim it should be in all the way when starting out of the hole.If manual trim try moving it in one notch.Too much weight in the stern will make planing difficult.
Where is the antivent plate in relation to the bottom of the boat.
Smart tabs do an amazing job of improvimng boat/motor performance but not until you are sure all else is set up properly.

Re: Slow To Plane Out

Everything steelespike said plus....
You have the correct pitch prop as your rpm are at the top end of the recommended range for your motor, 4750-5250.

The problem with this motor is that it uses a small gearcase with a small diameter prop. Not real good with a heavy load.

Be happy you are getting 40mph.

I only get 32-33mph with my aluminum boat and 70hp Force, running at 5300 rpm, with a 10.5 x 15p prop.

Re: Slow To Plane Out

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't realize the gear cases and props were slightly undersized for these engines. I'm very happy with top end performance(39.6mph on GPS). I was just a little concerned with the slow plane out for water skiing/tubing. There was only myself and one other person in the boat at the time, so weight shouldn't have been a factor. Thanks again.

Re: Slow To Plane Out

I added a doel fin to mine and that helped my hole shot a ton, I also lost 3-5 MPH on the top end but I get on plane quick with four on board.
