Hey guys just got the 03 Searay 176 boat and noticed the trim gauge does not seem to work right and the trim does work in the down position very quick bt it is very clow going back up but will go all the way up. The fluid seems to be okay but I have no clue if it is the right kind or not. How can I troubleshoot it? What do you think the problem could be? Any chance it is a aging relay? Or the fluid needs to be bled?

If motor trim motor is running but the drive comes up slow (your term meaning real slow) then its either the pump or cylinders binding.

You said, just got it so look at the trim fluid. The fluid should be clear to slightly yellow. It should be Merc fluid or 10W30 motor oil

Easy, not really
Can open the lines and run the pump, but that doesn't get it all

Disconnct the lines from the outdrive or at the pump? Or would a hand vac pump in the resevoir work?

If you just want to empty the reservoir use a vacuum pump and empty

If you want to also empty the rams, disconnect both lines at outside manifold below the drive. With rams disconnected from drive, push pull cylinders in both directions to empty.

Reconnect, fill reservoir and run pump up and down several times to bleed out air

is there any way to drain and refill the fluid easy?
I used a turkey baster to suck the reservoir empty, refilled it with fresh fluid, ran the drive up and down three or four times, and repeated whole process several times until I had flushed it completely. I found a gallon of the equivalent hydraulic oil at the auto parts store for like $15. I think hydraulic fluid labels iso 32 or something like that is a cross reference.

How much oil do I need and will regular 10w30 motor oil work for my setup? Should I run syntheitc? When I run the drive up and down numerous times after refilling should I leave the fill cap off to get air out? Finally how full should the res be with the outdrive in the up or down position?

10w30 or 5w30 is good, Reg or syn
May need 1 to 2 quarts, but depends on how much you flush out

Can leave the cap off while bleeding and just up to where the 2 halves are joined together at the tank
