(For the context of this: I have a heavy ~5-6k lbs cabin, 24' cabin cruiser with a 5.0 MerCruiser Alpha 1 Gen II.)
Yesterday I took my boat down the river ~3hrs. Everything was great. Upon returning , the wind was coming down the channel and created roller waves with little white caps. We spent a good 10+ minutes charging through those. It was a bumpy ride.
As we'd go, our speed would change as we'd plow into the backside of a roller and then accelerate after just to do it again. We'd lose a couple MPH. You could also hear the engine load change as we dealt with these conditions. It did strike me as odd because the engine sounded different than normal. Difficult to describe, but as the bow would come up out of the water the engine sounded higher pitch and not as grumbly and low. (take that description for what it's worth).
So far so good still though -
Until a large vessel was coming the opposite direction. Slow and heavy, created a huge wake and we took it decently hard because we had some speed (18-20mph). I tried to accelerate afterwards and the boat instantly started acting noticeably different. It didn't want to get on plane and there was now a vibration around 3,500 - 4,000 RPM. Once on plane, the vibration went away, but under heavy load, you could tell the boat was angry.
I checked the engine and the mounts and it *seemed* ok to me, but I couldn't be certain. I also considered that there might be a problem with the prop hub.
Any suggestions about what I can check or should check first?
Thanks!
