I have a 1978 Rinkerbuilt 17V with a Johnson 115
V-4..The motor starts great.Idles great.Seems to run smooth. No misses. The problem is with acceleration out of the hole...Like bringing up a skier or kneeboarder..Actually any time i floor it.It takes forever to plane.Nose points to the sky forever...Once it does plane it runs great.Do not think i have any problem with fuel starvation.
In fact i think it's a gas hog but i don't know how much it should be using either.I run what i think is a stock 19 pitch prop. Some one told me to try a 17 pitch prop...I think this motor should be fine with a 19...I think maybe timing...
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

My top rpm is around 5000-5200 if the tach works right...I'm gonna install a new one tommorrow cause somtimes when i tap on this one it will go up or down 200 rpm's or so...Also i have motor trimmed down all the way...Pin is down in lowest hole..

Re: sluggish acceleration 78 johnson 115

Bought a set of cativation fins for motor.Tried them this past weekend...Didn't think they did a whole helluva lot....The motor seems like...When you floor it,it's lagging power for about 10 or 15 secs then it seems to get its power back and take off and plane at the same time...Is it the motor or is it just cause it won't plane fast enough.....I just would think that a 115 h.p. motor on a 17 foot boat would really go...Ya know what i mean....It seems pretty fast once it's planed but i would think that big of motor would plane the boat fast and take off a hellin....
