Sluggish Evinrude 9.5

I really need some help with my 1972 Evinrude 9.5 motor. I took it out last week on my 14' aluminum jon boat, and it ran pretty quick for it's size. Today, I took out the motor again, and it acted very sluggish. At full throttle, it didn't go much faster than it usually does at half speed. Occassionally, I could feel a surge of power, but it would drop back down again. Also, when I would slow down to close to idle, and try to get back up to full throttle, it would take it a long time to get back up to speed. All the fuel lines are good, and so is the tank. After last week's run, I put new plugs on it because the motor was missing some, but I forgot to set them to the factory gap setting...does this effect it? Also, since I bought the motor from a good friend last month, I have not cleaned out the carb yet. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also, the new plugs that I bought were NGK spark plugs. The manual in the boating store said that for my motor, I should set the gap to .030, but on my motor itself, it says "set points .020"....which should I set the gap at? Thanks

Hi brent<br /><br />First off, point gap and plug gap are 2 different things....<br />>set plugs to .030<br />>set points to .020<br /><br />Definately change plugs before anything else!!<br />It sounds like you are losing a cylinder. this can be low compression, bad coil, bad plug wire, bad plug, dirty points, worn points, out of adjustment points, bad condenser, grounding kill wire, and many mechanical failures. It does sound more like ignition, as it cuts in and out.<br /><br />>how do the plugs look after running? any water droplets?<br />>have you checked for spark?<br />>do you have a manual?

Hi Brent<br /><br />OMC changed their specifications later.<br /><br />Adjust your gaps to 0.040 which should prevent plugs from fouling. Wrong gap can affect performance, but to mee it sounds as you have some dirt in gasonline, plugging jet in carb. First try the plugs and let us know. I suppose you did remember to open tank vent ? Also - has the fuel pump diaphragm ever been changed? I only ask - because my motor had sat for 30+ years, and when I (with the help pf several on this board) got it running again, it seeme to run fine for a while, then it started bogging down. It turned out that the fuel pump diaphragm had a rip in it, causing the engine to flood. Replaced it and it works like a champ, now. (Note - my motor is a 12Hp late 1950's era West bend - Sears labeled)<br /><br />Rex S.

Thanks a lot everybody. I will check the plugs and also look at the carburetor. I guess I need to get a manual because I don't know how to check half the things that Schematic listed, but I guess that's because this is my first outboard. I will tell you how it all looks!

Have a quick look at the ignition coils. Look for cracks or deterioration in the insulation around the coil. It is really common for the insulation to break down and then the spark will jump to (from?) ground at the magneto plate instead of the spark plug.

Brent,<br /> I have alot of parts, and tune up parts for this motor.... Let me know if I can be of any assistance to you. Sounds to me like a fuel problem perhaps a fuel pump, But for a motor this old it never hurts to check out some of the things mentioned.. Brent, Coils are under the flywheel you must pull the flywheel to take a look at them... sometimes you can look under neath it with a flashlight to check the coils.. Just e-mail me and I will be sure to give you a hand as i have 3 of these motors..

I took apart the carb. on my '72 evinrude 9.5 hp be cause I am getting too much fuel and it is flooding the motor. I loked at the float and it looks like a piece of cork with some shiny varnish all over it. Do I need a new float? I was thinking maybe the float is saturated and not floating up to close the needle. Any advice? Also, I put new coils in my motor, but I think they are supposed to be set a certain distance from the flwheel magneto. How do I set the distance between the coils in the magneto?
