Baystealth 1880 (~19 ft) center console fiberglass bayboat. Yamaha 115 4 stroke 19 pitch 3 blade ss prop.

Okay thats the setup. With a light load it does okay and hits a top speed of about 41 mph and close to 6000 rpm but it is a little sluggish out the hole.

Load it up with 4 people fuel and ice and it is a :(SNAIL:( out the hole. I'm talking everybody go to the front just to get it to plane off:eek:.

My question is should I jump down to a 15 pitch or a 17 pitch. I want this
"2nd" prop to use when I plan to haul a heavy load.

I kinda wish I was running a 17 all the time (I think). So maybe with that said I should jump down to the 15 for the heavy loads.

Also what about 4 blade or three blade. Does a 4 blade 17 act more like a 15 three blade or closer to 17 three blade or somewhere in between.

Thanks!

Re: Sluggish out the hole

The guru's here will need some more info so that following info is important:

ESSENTIAL DATA REQUIRED
When posting a question about propellers, you cannot get a reasonable answer unless you provide the following information in your post: Items 1-4 are essential for meaningful response to most questions.
1) Performance issue you are trying to correct.
2) Current prop manufacturer, model, aluminum or stainless and as a minimum.
3) Current prop diameter and pitch (required).
4) Wide open throttle RPM and speed with an average load (very helpful)
5) Engine/drive make, model, year, and HP
6) Boat make model, year, length and weight

Pas, it sounds like what you have to me is a 3 blade high rake prop that is raising the bow a lot during takeoff and therefore the stern sits deeper in the water at a bad attitude for planing and it takes forever to get it to drop over onto a plane, that is why the people have to get up front, to make the bow go down.
What you probably need is very low rake 4 blade prop with cup on the trailing edge so it will lift the stern and not the bow. You should be able to drop your pitch to 17 pitch and have about the same RPM you have now. That will cure your problem in my opinion, and will definitely increase your holeshot and acceleration greatly.

Can you suggest an aluminum in what you described?

I will only use it occasionally and don't want to invest too much.

Also can I assume correctly that a 4 blade acts or is similiar to a lower pitched 3 blade (in general)?

Pas, I would recommend either the volvo penta 4 blade or the solas amita 4 blade, you can buy either one on Iboats here for about a $100. You may gain a few RPM but the hole shot and acceleration will be very strong, muh better than a 3 blade.
