I have a 80 Silver Line with a Mercruiser 228, (305 Chevy) in her.
Soft plugs went and now I'm wondering?? "Are the back ones on their way out too"?
I have a friend that has a 327 Chevy 4 bolt main block, forged crank, all nice, nice.
Can I drop in the Mercruiser cam, and heads, water pump, intake set up and use that block??
I saw somewhere some guy took a 305 Chevy block and used it on his swap, (his block was cracked)?
Just wondering
Joe
They are right, a boat is a hole where you toss BIG $$!

Ayuh,.... To replace yer 1980 SBC, ya oughta be lookin' for a Pre-1986 long block,....
With a Pre-'86 block, All yer parts will swap over,.... I'd think yer Bud's 327 might be an Ok candidate,.......

It can still be done with a later block, but fitment issues have to be overcome,...
Rear main seals change, 'n there are head changes,...

Before getting to carried away find out what the pistons are (+ or - cc's) what the block is decked to and what cc heads you have. More than likely your friends motor is going to end up having a compression ratio that is way to high for marine use.

While a 327 would physically fit with no issues... I agree that the engine may not be set up for optimal use in a boat. The 327 is often set up to make power at the upper end of the rpm range - above what your boat wants or needs. A stock 350 would be your best choice.
