Small boat at sea (?)

Hi,
I plan to buy a 12' Porta Bote with 6HP 4 stroke Nissan. I'd like to take it fishing off the Pacific coast (San Francisco to Santa Cruz) 1 or 2 miles from shore. Have anyone tried anything similar or is it a bad idea? Any experience to share or advices would be appreciated.
Regards.

Yes, Khan.

Others have tried it but are not available for comment.

I wouldn't even take a 12' Boston Whaler offshore except as a lifeboat.

Get a salt water boat. Portaboats are for puddles.

I agree with the folks above. My grandfather did it with a fully rigid 14 footer but I would never even consider it. Grandpa really scared the whiz out of himself, too. I'd want much bigger and two engines capable of getting me back, not just one. (A healthy kicker motor plus the main at least) Shoot, I get nervous just riding out into a small bay to go abalone diving. I like fresh water, myself.

Kahn - A big welcome your way.

I hope you are with us long enough to stop by from time to time. Not a good idea unless you are suicidal. Your family might not like that unless you have a heavy life insurance policy.

Khan – welcome to the board here!!! :)

About your question…ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! The boat and motor you mentioned will not be safe in either bay (SF or Monterey). Sorry…if you want to fish these bays you will be happier and safer in the appropriate boat.

Also, if you are new to boating you may want to think about taking a boating class, free or low-cost, from either the Coast Guard Auxiliary or the United States Power Squadron ( www.usps.org ). They will give you some insight into safe boating. You will also learn about the boating laws.

khan
I think also a bad idea. Pacific in San Francisco area all summer long seas average 4 to 6 feet with many days over 9 feet. Winds blow over 20 knots out of the Northwest almost every afternoon. Just outside the Golden Gate is a shallow area where the mud drops out of the river water when the current slows down. This area is called the potato patch and many boats on the bottom right their. On the Ebb tide with swells and wind coming in and shallow water get real bad right there very fast. Also called the 4 fatom bank. Also Summer time water temperature about 54 to 55 degrees so if go in the water only have 20 to 30 minutes.

Santa Cruz is better but for the ocean you need a V Hull boat at least 14 feet. I fish mostly out of Bodega Bay and see lots of 16 to 18 foot Klamath or Gregor open boats and they do very well in all but the worst days.

Today was one of the best days you will see wind never got over 7.8 knots with gust to 9.7 knots from the NorthWest 310 degrees. Still swells got to 6.9 feet every 11 sec. Water temperature 53.1 F degrees

Your boat most days would be ok in the south bay. In the North Bay and San Pablo Bay still not a good idea.

http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.phtml?$station=46013

NO! The porta boats are great but not for going two miles off shore!!! Even if you did, where would you put the fish?

If you filed that float plan with Coastguard do you think they would just follow you out there? :(

Hello, If you haven't purchased it yet and you know it won't fit your needs then why buy it? Look for a boat that can take you to where you want to go. There are plenty of used boats in great shape to be had for a decent price. I would check around, you will be much happier in the end if you do! Good luck! :)

Hi Folks,
Thanks for all the replies, I've sure abandoned the idea (I have no plan for Hollywood to have a second Titanic movie).
Khan
