I have a small 13 foot boat that is primarily used in Saltwater....I'm looking for the best small inline fuel filter/water seperator for my application....

I've seen the small racor filters with the plastic bowl on the bottom but am not sure what model will be best for my application....

My outboard is a 40hp 2 stroke Tohatsu and i'm using a 12 Gallon Tempo Fuel Tank.....

I have heard its not necessary to have one for my boat but if there reliable and fairly low maintenance I should spend the $$ and put one on now.....

Any suggestions would be appreciated........

you need one rated for the fuel flow of your motor, which i don't know.

yamaha makes a real nice 10 micron water seperator called the mini 10, its rated for engines up to 115 HP.
the larger yamaha 10 micron is rated for all HPs and flows 90 GPH when new.
with a tempo above deck tank a water seperator is a must, cause I have yet to see one that did not leak.

Re: Small Boat Fuel Filter/Water Seperator

Warren, You can get a resin bodied water seperator with a spin on element for about $25. I think this is overkill for your boat, however. You might just make sure there is no large buildup of water in your tank, and the alcohol in the gasoline will absorb the rest of the water.

Every few fillups, siphon out about a 1/2 gallon of fuel from the bottom of the tank, into a clear container. If you see water (cloudy) carefully pour off the gas back into the tank and dump the water. if you buy fuel from reputable dealers, it is likely you will have little/no water, in the amount of fuel you use in a season.

Does anyone know of a good place to purchase a filter/water seperator??....I looked here on Iboats and didn't see many options....

Another question....Are the models with the clear plastic bowl very durable??...My boat pounds really bad and even in the back of the boat may take some abuse......

Tohatsu sell them through their dealers. You can get on their web site and get the part #.
