First buy a cheap compass just for direction.....

Second if you are traveling out of sight range..... buy a ship to shore marine radio.....

Now look for the other electronics.

Re: small boat small radar?

I am with Thurp, I have a 14' AB Inflatable RIB and I love to fish. I live about a mile from the Columbia river and we have both fog and barge traffic. I would like to do some Halibut or Tuna fishing off of the coast. But I would probably have another vessel out there with me.

I plan on purchasing some sort of radar in the future and mount it to the A frame along with my Lowrance 334C-IGPS.

The photos are of my old RIB, a 12 footer.

Rip some lips!

I don't feel a particular need for radar on my 17.5 foot boat but, in an age where many people spend in the neighborhood of 30 grand on an 18 to 20 foot boat, what's an extra grand?

Throwing in another point cause I don't boat much in fog but I always figured the coolest thing about radar is you can spot where the birds are feeding on bait fish i.e. long range fish finder.

You're not going to see birds any further than you can see with the naked eye using a dome. You'll need to swing an array to see birds at any distance.

radar on that small of a boat seems like a waste. just go slower
if u have gps youll be okay and just stay out of the channel if possible. we dont have problems with other boats in the fog.
we were traveling at 2am? (went on a 24 hour trip to get to block island) and a fishing boat hailed us on 16 asking what we were. my guess is that the radar reflector made us look bigger then we were. invest in a reflector theyre cheap and easy.
i have a 33' sailboat and dont have radar although i am considering it for going offshore.
