There is a small crack on the top of the transom of my 85 15' Aries bass boat. The crack is on the lip of the transom where the boat catches water when decelerating and is located on the driver's side where this lip meets a larger mass. Portions of the crack are roughly 1/16" wide.

I'm going to try to mechanically secure it the best I can (probably a couple of bolts at a joint if I can reach them) and then apply a fiberglass resin into the crack. If wood is rotted, then so be it. I don't think that the boat is worth a restoration. However, I would like to keep water out of the crack. Does this procedure sound like a good idea?

The resin will only be as strong as the wood it adheres to. If it's rotten then your resin won't do much. you might want to put some cloth on the outside for some strength.
