I noticed this small crack on the steering cable by the motor. I don't know much about steering cable but I just thought I should make sure that this will not cause a dangerous situation by completely breaking apart and loosing steering. It looks like just the outer sheathing. I talked to a guy at the marine store and he said that water might get in and seize it but I figure a little duct tape should seal it up fine.

That sure is a funny place to crack, how far around the nut does it go? If it is more than half way around it I don't like it. If it is on a big motor I would replace it. In truth even if that seperated you wouldn't lose total control. The question is what could make it crack across the threads. A good tig welder could stitch that up I think. $130 should replace it.

No, I would say the crack is at most half way around. I am wondering if while restoring this boat I mishandled it maybe and possible it cracked there. just a guess. Well as long as it's not insanely dangerous. I have always used tiller motors so this whole steering system is all new to me.
I was just concerned because I have been warned that a total loss of steering at high speed can be fatal. This is just a 30 hp on a 16 foot aluminum but still.

That one does not look to bad,but cables corrode from the inside out. It could be bad inside there.
