Have any of you guys purchased a small engine off the net? I've been surfing around pricing engines at diffents places and its amazing the price difference on the same engine. The most expensive i've found is at Northern Tool and the least expensive is at Small Engine Suppliers somewhere in Missouri. If anyone else knows of a supplier whos prices are reasonable I'd sure appreciate it.

web page

Yall may or may not remember a post I put here about a Troy Built 6 horse Tecumseh engine blowing oil out the crank case vent....well I tried to use it a little bit last weekend and it poured oil out the vent. I'm wanting to replace it with an 8 horse. I plan on keeping the 6 horse, rebuilding it and putting it on an old Yazoo Big Wheel Trott Behind mower I have.

Re: Small Engine Purchase Online

yeah, I've seen them and another place (Small Engine Suppliers). Small Engine Warehouse price is $25 more than than Small Engine Suppliers.

I think I'm going to use Small Engine Warehouse because they have a phone number to call listed on their site and the other doesn't. The only way to contact Small Engine Suppliers is via email and I'd rather be able to reach out and talk to someone on the phone if i need to. Besides, I can look up Small Engine Warehouse's phone number up on line in the white pages and theres no listing for the other one.

what model is this Troy Built tiller? If the motor raises and lowers to enguage the belt drive a genaric type motor may not bolt up to the housing.

Horizontal crank engines from 3 to 7HP and some 8HP models all have the same bolt pattern when talking Briggs, Tec, Kohler,etc...
One thing you need to watch for on "Net engines" is the fact that some wharehouses are selling units bought for OEM applications, and in some cases, the Model, type and code numbers will be removed when you receive the engines. In this case, No dealer can perform ANY warranty work as these numbers are required on the claim. The Missouri small engine wholesaler is famous for this.

the Troy Built Horse series 1,2 and 3 roto tiller did not use the standard 4 bolt pattern on the bottom of the motor. The Econo Horse,Junior and Pony did. The Horse motor used a special back cover on the motor as the motor mount. The motor was bolted to a cast iron bell type housing that raised and lowered via a yoke assembly to engage the tines and wheel drive. The last one of these motors that I replaced (last spring) sold for $367.00 Also some Horse and Econo Horse tillers had a 3/4 inch output shaft on the motor not the standard 7/8 shaft

Look on ebay. There are TONS of brand new engines for very cheap. Most of the discount engine places also sell on ebay, almost allways for cheaper than on their website.

Well, I pulled the trigger on 8 fresh Tecumseh horses from that outfit up in Dunkirk, Indiana (Small Engine Warehouse).

I feel more comfortable buying from them since the have all their contact info (street addres, phone numbers and such) on their site. They even have a map of how to find their place if you want to go there. Anyway, I should be getting it sometime next week.

Thanks guys ! !

I bought an 8 hp Tecumseh horizontal shaft flat head from small engine wharehouse in 2003. Came with all factory papers & warrantee. Well packaged in Tecumseh factory box. No problems.

Except it does pump oil out the breather when the governor is removed and it is run WOT for about 20 - 30 seconds under load. I have this motor on a boonie bike. So it gets a little abused.

Re: Small Engine Purchase Online

I'm impressed and disappointed a little bit with my new engine. After I installed the mounting bell and pulley's I mounted on the tiller. Everything fit like a dream. Filled it with oil and gas to make ready for the first start. Grabbed the rope stroked it once, the engine started on very first pull. I'm impressed ! ! ! Everything should start so easy. It ran a little rough but eventually smoothed out and ran ok.

I'm disappointed though because theres no air fuel adjustments on the carburator. Oh well, I guess I'm from the old school and like to be able to adjust things to my liking.
