Good day gentlemen,
I was recently gifted an older Evinrude 2 cylinder outboard. Previous owner did not know much at all about it. It has been painted over several times and no Model Number/Serial Number plate is to be found on it. There is however a freize type plug on the block that has "M and the letter/number sequence J319197757 stamped below it. Is there some way of determining any info about this engine from this plug ? Thanks in advance for your help.

Looks like a 6hp.

Thanks for the reply. From what I have discovered through searching, it could also be a 4HP. I still don't know what year or model it is. I sure wish they would have taken the time to hard stamp this kind of info into the block before it left the manufacturer !

Judging by the paint colour you have a 6hp and about a 69 / 70 model.---A very good motor to repair / run.--Made for many years and parts are easy to get.

Looks like a 6hp. Also I think it is a johnson.

You may be right about it being a Johnson....from what I have found , the 'J' on the frieze plug may indicate Johnson. I have also learned that the 'M' on the top of the plug means it is a Mallory....Thanks for your reply too brother.

????------It is a JOHNSON and 6 HP.-----Accept that as fact.------4 hp never came with shifter !!!----And the M has nothing to do with MALLORY either.-----That M is part of the OMC trade mark.--------OMC is the company that made Evinrude / Johnson !!

Well , I have previously owned a 1973 Evinrude 85 HP....it was green leg and lower cowling with a white upper cowling... factory decals on the upper....factory paint too....

Funny that.---What you see on the 4 hp is the THROTTLE and it is NOT THE SHIFTER !!!!!----I can not recall a GREEN Evinrude either.

I concur that the motor is a 1968 through 1971 Johnson 6 horse. That shade of dark green was used for those years. The decal on the control area will tell the story since it is the last bit of original trim left. I have been looking at the decals and HAVE IT PEGGED as a 1968 model. Compare the front faceplate to this one from 1968. Next compare it to the 1970 style. The 1969 & 1971 versions had silver on the control area, not black.

The 6-horse in that style was actually produced from 1965 through 1979, but be aware that the 1965 propellers are non-splined and are the same as the earlier 1954-64 5?.
