I have a vintage 1965 evinrude 3hp and the new gasket has a small hole and noticed the reed plate has a small hole in the same location that was plugged solid. I cleaned it but what is this hole for? Thanks

That hole is part of a passage leading between the upper main bearing and the intake manifold. Any oil leaking past the upper bearing is drawn down to the intake manifold and recycled instead of making a mess and fouling the magneto breaker points..

This one reason why I chuckle when I see the u-toobers and their videos.-----I have seen them use too much sealer on gaskets.-----And they have no idea what they may be plugging up.

Close to 50 yrs ago, I stripped the Spark Plug hole on my dad's 40hp Johnson. He took the Head off and had an insert put in. Putting the Head back on, he liberally coated the Head Gasket with Permatex 2. That year, we had the Over Heat lamp come on many times. Lots of Water was coming out the Idle Relief. Replaced the Water Pump, even though it looked fine, still overheated. Either the Temp Switch was bad, or years later I thought maybe it was too much of the Goop, that reduced the Water Circulation and caused a Hot Spot. He sold the Boat the next year and bought a different bunch of Problems

One presenter on you tube ( initials start with a " B " ) usually puts lots of sealer on gaskets.----Saw one video where he put lots on a 9.9 reed plate.----I doubt he knew that there is an internal passage way for oil recirculation.----Even has a filter screen and check valve.----So for him a little bit of sealer might be good.----And LOTS is even better !-----Sad part is that many folks might follow his example.
