Man am I pumped! I was turned on to a pond that's loaded with large and smallmouth bass. Went out on the water the other night with my canoe and caught some real nice smallies and lost a hog of largemouth. I went and had my canoe registered so I could throw on the trolling motor on and fish the whole lake tonight.

I not new to fishing but I am too catching smallmouth and I'm loving it. I just wish someone would have told me that in a canoe, a smallmouth will give you a bath when catch them :p

Anyone care to share a good lure or technique on slamming smallies? I caught them the other evening using a 4" pumpkinseed power crawl, a bk/bl spinner and my favorite Bass Assassin 5" clear sluggo. Tonight I'm taking the camera and get some pics of them fish before I release them.

Re: small mouth

Hey NH, you have a great smallmouth fishery in your back yard. I've pulled several 4+ out of the "tooky" in a canoe. My favorite bait of all time for smallies is live crayfish, doesn't get better than that.

If you want to fish artificials, 3/8 and 1/4 oz colorado bladed spinnerbaits, and jigs tipped with plastic grubs work well. When you want to bring them to the top for some surface action small stick bait minnows (rapala's) and the Zara Spook when you "walk the dog" will bring those bronze-backs from the depths to demolish your lure

Re: small mouth

I've got a path going right down to the river behind the house and have put my canoe in there many times. I've only caught pickrel and a nice 4+ largemouth out the river so far. Nailed him on a sluggo I bounced off the large rock down by I-89 :D If you ever put in there again let me know, you can put in at the paper mill and fish all the way down to my house and I'll give you a ride back up to the mill. Beats paddling or running your trollong motor down.

I'll have to try my perch color Rapala tonight and a jig. I was surprised I didn't get any top water action the other evening. I'm a big fan of top water ;) Lots of fun having them smash a top water lure. I didn't stick around much after 8 in the evening so maybe it was still to hot for them it come to the surface? Hopefuly tonight I can stay out later and explore more of the lake. If you ever want to hit the water with me or if you fish the river again, give me call 746-5416. Thanks for the lure tips, I'll be trying them tonight :D

Tom

Re: small mouth

Hey Tom,
I almost went flyfishing behind your house, below the dam saturday morning, but the kids wanted to go so I took them up to Clement Pond and we killed the largemouth. Nobody else was out, the water was glass and the bass were hitting everything.

I may take you up on that offer of running me back to the mill. I have floated from the boat launch on College Hill rd down to the big dam. The current gets going in there a little faster, not white water or nothing, just makes it a nice drift. Well, there are some big rocks on that stretch in the middle and the smallies stay behind them and ambush anything that flows by the rocks.

The stretch of river from Broad Cove down to River Hill is pretty good too.

Anyhoo, this week is gonna be a busy one, getting ready for vacation nex week. But after that I'd love to hook up with you and do some bassin. My # is 746-7582. Talk to you soon.

Ken

Re: small mouth

Well, I left in a hurry and forgot my camera and my trolling motor battery so I ended up having to paddle :( Slammed just smallies again but did see some lunker largemouth swimming along side my canoe. The Rapala didn't work and the jig was the ticket. Had three smallies doing a tail walk across the water and one that almost jumped in the canoe.

I found a shallow spot with lilly pads out in the middle of the lake that smallies were flocking to. I ended up boating a few with the fly rod and a white popper. Broke out my slugo as it got later into the evening hoping to find a largemouth but it only found two huge pickerel. I couldn't believe how many bats that appeared out of nowhere so fast  Then came the mosquitoes and I was off to the races with my canoe heading for the truck. I don't think my trolling motor could have gone as fast as I was in that canoe :) Again, another great evening on the water.

You should have stayed out for an hour or two after dark. That's when those big sallies come in shallow looking to dine on crayfish. That's when you pull out your trusty dark colored colorado bladed spinnerbait.

Ever tried Pleasant Pond in Deerfield or Jenness Pond in Northwood? Both have excellent smallmouth populations and the water crystal clear. You can see them 20 feet down in the spring on the beds.
