Hello all! I have a 15' CC with a 1997 Merc 60hp 2-stroke.
I was out on the lake tubing with friends and everything went fine until I drifted into some weeds while changing out people. Once I got out of the weeds I hit WOT and got high RPMs but wasn't going anywhere. I shut down the engine and tilted it up to clear the weeds. I was back in action, and everything went fine! So again, changing people, got the weends thing again. I figured no problem, I will just clear them and be on my way.
I believe my boat is proped correctly, 5500 RPMs at WOT. But after the last weeds encounter it would all the sudden reach 6000-6500 RPMs but no increase in speed. I do not have a speedo on my boat as I use a GPS, but didn't have it that day, so the "no increase in speed" thing is simply by feel. I was still able to pull a person tubing with no problems, but only did it once since the tube and rope broke on that very run anyways!
OK, this might be the key to my problem...
I pulled the boat out of the water and inspected the motor. While the motor was off, I put it in reverse and turned the prop by hand. Both clockwise and counter clockwise I felt compression. I put it into forward and only got compression going counter clockwise. Turning it clockwise I just get a clicking sound. It does not take any strength to turn the prop clockwise to produce this either. This clicking sound, sounds the same as when you shut the motor down will still moving in the water and the motor is still in gear. Is it supposed to be this way?
To sum things up, my problem is that I am now getting higher RPMs at WOT than I was getting before and it all started when I was pulling tubers (first time for me) and came in contact with weeds.
Any ideas?
