Small thing under motor

I am in the process of rep peering my 1990 sundancer. While pulling the old motor I noticed that there is a small round pick like thing directly under the engine in the bilge. Does anyone know what this can be? It has a wire that goes to it and is approximately 4" round in diameter.

My SWAG is a float switch for an auto bilge pump,

If you posted a picture of it I'd bet someone would have it labeled for you in no time.

guessing either the snap in base for a bilge pump, or as TDF indicated, a pump auto-switch.

Without a picture it would be hard to guess....Float switch for the bilge pump or a transducer for the depth finder

My guess is that you meant a puck and in that case it's a transducer for a depth sounder.

Gotcha. In that case shouldn't this be attached to the bilge indtead of just sitting there?

I understand that but every time I try to take a quick pic to post here, it says file exceeds limit size..

Unless it came loose... Does it look similar to this pic?

If it is a transducer puck...it needs to be epoxied on to the hull so it shoots thru the hull.

Not sure poly resin would stick to that plastic puck. Epoxy should though if the spot on the hull and the puck are clean.

Couldn't I just cut some pieces of fiberglass strips and apply some resin ?

you could, however it wont read right, needs to be epoxied in place (and not with the 5-minute stuff). the epoxy can not have any bubbles in it either (affects the reading).

you cannot have an air gap between the transducer and the hull, it will affect the reading. Hence the reason to epoxy it in place and the longer cure time version is to alloy you to slowly mix and not add air bubbles when mixing.
