smaller prop to reduce speed?

Hi,
I'll try this again in the proper forum...

I have a 1990 Johnson 6hp kicker. The stock prop is 8 1/2" dia., pitch is 9", 3 blades. I cannot tell you the rpm (no tach), I cannot tell you the weight of the boat (1987 Bayliner Capri 14'). I called iBoats but the only prop they have for this motor is the stock prop.

I have searched for a smaller prop but cannot find anything.

My questions are:

Can a smaller prop help to reduce the trolling speed at idle?

If yes to question one, where can I get one?

Thanks in advance.

Skintner, even at the lowest RPM you would only lose .5 MPH if you changed to a 7" pitch prop. Here are the numbers. You can either buy a trolling flap or throw a sea anchor over the side.

Thanks for the response, HWSIII. That .5 mph would put me at close to 1.5mph, which I understand is the optimum speed for trolling for kokanee.

I've been using a 5 gallon bucket "drag anchor", but would much prefer to slow it with another prop if it's at all possible.

WOW! I have the same issue.
Feel that is really significant.

Re: smaller prop to reduce speed?

Hi again,
The iBoats customer service lady suggested I call Johnson about different size props (what a novel idea! lol)

The technician at Johnson told me there are 3 props available for my motor:
9" pitch, 7 1/2" pitch, and 7" pitch. I ordered the 7" pitch, which is a decrease of 2 degrees.
