Re: Smart tabs?? Are they worth it??

Per Smart Tabs instructions in the package, I purchased and installed a round zinc on each tab. Just driled through the tab and mounted them on the top of the tab. They are easy to find around here. My boat then sat in a berth in Destin, FL for 9 days and it was easy to see why the zincs were so important!!

You have a more than serious electrolysis problem if any difference was seen in 9 days. A severe case would see unprotected parts etching in 2-3 months. Your boat, the boat next to you or the dock likely has some major wiring issues and bleeding juice.

2nd thought...maybe you have the wrong anode material. Zinc for saltwater and magnesium for freshwater.

Re: Smart tabs?? Are they worth it??

Just an update:

Got correct parts from NautiJohn (thank you) and with some creativity got them mounted. Correct mounting location of one of the hinges fell right in the middle of my drain plug hole. Had to cut part of the hinge off but its mounted very nicely now.

Did one run in it yesterday and while it ran flatter on the water, it now throws a roostertail of water up behind it which it never did before. Tomorrow I'm gonna try with the other larger motor and see how that behaves.

Run it again and make some specific notes about the performance, and where the rooster tail is coming from (Tabs or motor). You may need to trim the motor out one or two holes. Anyway, call me when your ready and I will try to help with the adjsutments.

Re: Smart tabs?? Are they worth it??

I purchased Smart tabs without any problem at all!! Think about the assembly as saving money!!
The help I got from John was nothing but excellent, he answered all my question and did not mind the multiple calls- thats customer service! Took my first ride yesterday with the tabs and to my delight they performed great. I can know get through the rough chop much better. I can ride at slower speeds without feeling that I am just plowing through with my Nose way up! Sliding is gone -I know have control coming down.
Side to side is also better. And the funny thing is that when I am at Idle speed through the canal I have much less correction to do. as you see I am happy so far. hopefully today I will give it the WOT test- yeterday it was just to rough and I did not want to open it up

All I can say is Thanks Nauticus and thanks to John for the support

COOL IT !!!

Call them on their toll free number or click on the site's icon for Factory Specials- seconds so to speak. Cosmetic blemishes but no real damage. I saved $50 on my kit. And the scratch on the tab isn't even a big deal. I'll take that!

UFM82

Re: Smart tabs?? Are they worth it??

UFM82;

At this time in the season we have sold all of the blemished product in the ST980 series, & ST1290 series. The Smart Tabs II product is new and we have had no blemished to date.

In the past some of the components have been imported. As of March, all key components are manufactured in the USA. As a result of our agreements with our suppliers "blemished" or any component that is not manufactured to specification will be rejected. We have worked hard with our new suppliers to keep the defectives to the absolute minimum if not eliminated as one of the cost cutting and containment programs.

By the way, plse let me know about the way the smart tabs will affect reversing. I can only imagine that they will be facing down when not in use and that they will seriously pull down the back of the boat in reverse.
Thanks
D

Damdan;

The plates are not deployed enough to cause reverse handling issues, unless you try to back up at 5 or 6 mph. The flat transom inhibits backing up fast.

This is a common question and if you are concerned just ask the other Smart Tabs users if they have had issues.

Re: Smart tabs?? Are they worth it??

Thanks nautiJohn but in my area there is no one to ask. I spoke to five marine shops yesterday and reactions differed from "Huh?" to "saythatagainafewtimes" to "yes that little thing on the outboard motor" to "Wtf, we only sell boating accessories".
Shop no 5 remembered a Bennett product called stabilizers on ships with planing hulls but doing the same job.
See, Im in the boating desert.
By the way I tried but iboats mailed me that a purchase is not possible. Could paying/shipping be that big a problem?
See, boating desert.
Thanks
D

I am sure they would like to accomodate you but it is not within their system at this point. I may be able to help through our distributors in Europe. Contact me at Info@nauticusinc.com

Re: Smart tabs?? Are they worth it??

another follow-up. I installed the tabs on my inflatable with the >10hp motor. Honestly, they didnt make any difference that I could tell, but I did install them in their most relaxed adjustment. So I adjusted them down to what I would approximate is maybe 35 degrees down. I'm totally estimating that angle so dont grab for your protractor yet! :) This seemed to help with planing a bit but also made the boat more sensitive to loading.... not a big deal I try to keep my boat properly loaded anyways, but all of a sudden the small weight differences make a much bigger difference.

So I decided to try the bigger motor. This motor has had planing fins installed since before I bought it. With this motor boats pops right up on plane and scoots along at 30+ mph on flat water. I've not run this motor on my boat without the planing fin installed so I cant comment on the differences.

I would like to know however what combination of fins/tabs/etc is best. Should I keep running with both smart tabs and the planing fin on the motor? Should I remove the planing fin from the motor for use with the smart tabs?

Re: Smart tabs?? Are they worth it??

Nexus,
I would definitely remove the fin. Also try increasing the pressure on the tabs not the angle. I bit of fiddling should improve things greatly.

Cheers,
Snow.
