Re: Smart Tabs, Bass boat "UPDATE"

If you mean that it steers from side to side, thats normal for an outboard. Overcorrecting makes it worse.

This is the worst I've seen in 30yrs of boats. I imagine I'm overcorrecting also, the steering has 1 1/2" of play in it. LOL, 21 yrs of use, its getting tired.

Re: Smart Tabs, Bass boat "UPDATE"

My boat walks around while idling. It started this when I raised the engine on the jackstand. ALSO, Higher the motor is trimmed, the worse it is.
It's not as bad as some of my other boats were though.
My transom looks the same as those new skeeters. But, I have a 17' ft boat and I bet that test on their website is with a 20'. Also, I washed myself down with a full tank of fuel, four batteries and a fat guy sittin in the passenger seat.
Wonder if the new skeeters have the tank relocated?
I do have one of those hydrofoils on it and that pretty much cured the "swamping"....and....I also do a throttle "bump" also.

I sure like the boat though, Much more than I thought I would. Figured I'd fix it up, make it pretty, use it for a year or so, sell it and buy myself what I really wanted (Ranger).
As of right now though, even with a few problems that I'm working on, I have no desire to get rid of it. I just haven't seen anything I'd like any better which is odd for me.

That's the same Idea I have. Just as soon as the wife gets convinced it's to small.

It's small but you get the idea. Will the smart tabs work on my transom?

Cutting the throttle quickly IS how to keep backwash from happening on most boats. Don't rely heavily on a boat advertisement make it look like they have a special hull that prevents it. You don't need tabs to stop it either. It' an OLD technique used for years and years by boaters...my uncle taught me that one back in the 1960s and I'm sure it was around long before that.

Well, Bill, I know we have had our differences in the past, and Im not going to say this just to start a rift. "BUT"!

I you want to wash the people sitting in the back of your boat out of your boat  and check your bilge pump, you just do as you said.

It's pretty much habbit for many bass boat owners to bump the throttle right before the "wash" hits.
I've heard of flat bottom metal boats sinking because they ran out gas while running wide open.

ladano, see if John has any enlightenment on those tabs fitting your boat. I just don't see how it could be done without doing some bodywork, unless there is a way to get a VERY short strut and mount it at a 90 degree angle up to those "sponsons".

And just how many times and different boats have you actually tried this on? I speak from experience...100s of times on dozens of boats with transom hung engines...for decades. There are exceptions but most boats get less water over the transom this way. May be hard to believe but is true.

Bassin_Fever,
Ya know...Now that I think about it....BillP may be correct.

It's well known fact that when you stop a boat the bow comes down first, thus, raising the transom.

My 65hp/35mph/72 Ranger has never even come close to swamping.

On a side note...You should see this boat. "Almost" looks like new. It didn't take much to restore it.
Just some minor body work where I ran it off the edge of the world a few years back.....

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, Well, I have never seen a boat the wouldnt backwash to some extent if you just chop the throttle and I have been around a few boats or two. Even the bosses 21 foot Leavy Craft with the 454 I/O just about washed his best freinds off the back seat the first time he took it out, they were not impressed as they were not dressed for it.

Im sure that there may be some boats that dont, but I think that the majority of boats will backwash if you just chop the throttle. Every one that I have ever had did.

Probably because he eased the throttle back to the point of creating a huge wake and then chopped the throttle. That's why people have to "bump" the throttle to keep water out. Either way a stern heavy 454 IO isn't a valid comparison with the majority of ob boats...not even in the same ballpark.

Otherwise, there is nothing to debate. Everyone should try it to see what their boat does and make their own mind up.

Re: Smart Tabs, Bass boat "UPDATE"

Well I guess I fall under the bassboat guys too....and I am not trying to brew the pot here.....but if I just kill the gas....the stern sinks....the bow comes up....and water comes in. Does it my dads bassboat too and his motor weighs a lot less than mine. If I let off slow and trim in and then do the "bump" I pull out of it with no water. Just my thoughts.
