Hi,
I just purchased a 2010 Q7i, 260 HP. I knew when I bought the boat, this model had a few issues, wondering at low speed being one. Question: has anyone installed the nautilus smart tabs on the 2010 Tahoe Q7i?

Re: Smart Tabs

I am installing mine this week and will post pictures of the install with the fittings Nauticus sent to me to prevent binding. If you have the tabs ( 60lbs seem to be the consensus ) go ahead and call them there is no cost and they only take 2 to 3 days to get them you. At least you will have them if you decide to use them and they are no charge.

OK here is the pic of my transom.

Here is the original mount that straddles the mounting flange on the tab.
photo 1.jpg
Because it straddles the mount when it is mounted at the required angle the center hit when they are up.
the replacement mount they sent mounts off to one side so there will be no binding.

I will install friday and start a new thread with the entire installation.

Re: Smart Tabs

spdracr,
Sorry for the delay on this reply. This was my first chance to get on computer since post. I was trying to respond with my tablet, but for some reason it wasn't working with the website. I appreciate the posts!!! I haven't been able to call Nauticus during business hours due to work. My main concern is I believe the transom design has been changed since 2008. will try to post a pic of mine. I noticed on the application sheet on the antics site that the Q7i is kinda between sizes. So the 60's have been working good for Q7i's? 80's ar definitley to stiff?

Yeah, go with the lighter actuators. If your main concern is wander, then you will not necessarily want the higher pressure for higher speeds. either way they will help with the low speed stuff. If she doesn't porpoise now trimmed out, I would move some weight aft. The tabs will help and she'll be faster this way.

Re: Smart Tabs

I found a pic of the 2011 q7 install it was one that nauticus sent to me. He said they would not be as effective on the chine walking but will still work as advertised for everything else. I am installing mine Friday but not this way. Also on a side note this installation does not require the non binding fittings.

Here is an installation on a 2008 Q5 that looks similar to what you seem to have.

Re: Smart Tabs

Great pics!! That's the kind of examples I've needed to see. I imagined the installation on the red boat would be too narrow. Not a tricky install, but figured the effectiveness would be reduced due to being narrow. Simple physics. I remember reading somewhere the wider the better. I plan to copy the Q5 pic. However, my transom has an angle almost similar to a bass boat. Almost wondering if I should purchase the Mobsters... Definitely need more research!!

P.S. is the Q5 owner a member? Do you have his handle? I'd like to talk to them...

Re: Smart Tabs

No I don't know whose boat it is. Greg from Nauticus sent me these pictures as examples because they didn't have my year model on file. He did say the owner of the 2011 Q7 called and told him the narrow install worked fine because I had the same concerns. If you mount them like the Q5 pictures be sure you get the proper down angle by protractor because they will not automatically hang in the proper position.

Re: Smart Tabs

I emailed nauticus and got reply back with the same pics of narrow installation. Just need to decide on 60 or 80 lb actuators. Then I can see if they'll work in the wider position. Which I really hope it does... for maximum effect!!

When you say proper down angle, are you referring to the suggested 25 degrees in installation instructions? Or is it the angle of the hull bottom from gunnel to keel? Concerning that... I assum the tab surface needs to be parallel with the bottom surface that the tab is mounted adjacent to and NOT parallel to the ground. BTW... Thanks so much again for all the answers, my work has prevented
Me from calling during their business hours. Look forward to seeing your after pics. Can you take a pic level with bottom of tab so I can see the angle in relation to bottom surface of hull? Thanks!!!!!!

Re: Smart Tabs

25 degrees down as per instructions and all measurements are in relation to the bottom of the hull. The tabs should be mounted where they are flush or just slightly above the bottom plane of the hull so they will not create drag. Also all installations I have read about here say to go with the 60lb. The 80lb are too much and will decrease your top speed because they drag a little. I had 80's on my other q7 and I lost a couple of mph because of that but never changed them out because I never really ran wide open anyway. I will send a pic when I do my install tonight.

I think you are talking about Deadrise, but that would not be from the gunnel. It would be the line from the chine to the keel (typically at the transom) expressed in degrees above "flat". Yes, you want the tabs parallel with that line.

I would not attempt to get the tabs flush with the hull. Go slightly above. Say half inch.

Re: Smart Tabs

To spdrcer: look forward to the pics. Will be ordering today. I'm not too concerned with top speed. More interested in ride... especially within a SPD range of 28 to 48 on rough lake conditions (high winds or lots of traffic). Will the 80lb actuators give a more stable ride in those conditions? It seems though they would also hurt gas mileage since they would probably have more drag...

Re: Smart Tabs

Get the 60 lb actuators, the 80's will be too strong, you will not be able to get the bow out of the water and you engine will suck gas like it was going out of style.

Re: Smart Tabs

Yes... That's what I was asking. I apologize for my ignorance!! Just did a quick education on web search for gunnel... I read about the 1/2" above bottom for mounting... Is it ok to "straddle" a chine. It looks like my optimum mounting in from edge of boat will leave a chine within the width of tab plate. Or should I mount it between a chine, even if that moves the mount in closer to engine?

Re: Smart Tabs

Perfectly ok to straddle a chine, the ones I have straddle one on my boat, no problem.
