Smartcraft vs. DDT

I would like to be able to read out the engine error codes on my Merc 8.1L engine.

Which way would you go.... Purchasing the Rinda digital diagnostic terminal or going with a Smartcraft gauge?

If Smartcraft, which gauge would you go with, the SC1000 (does the SC1000 give engine error codes?) or SC5000 Systemview?

I would go with the scan tool. You can't retreive the Freezframe memory with a Smartcraft display, and most of the time thats where the answers are. On the other hand a Smartcraft display will show faults and is nice to have because it's connected all the time. So you should get both!
