Me and my wife, an 18 foot pontoon, 1999 60h.p. 2 cycle Merc. Bigfoot o.b. running a 14" x 13 pitch prop and 30 mile trip (50 minutes) upriver between 2,500 - 4,100 rpm (depending on how high the wakes get) and i start to smell what i believe to be a hot stator. Volt gauge shows 14 volt at cruising rpm and 12 volt at idle. Pop the hood off and no hot wires touch or visual (2 yellows off of stator are good to go) top of crank gear is hot but not over hot, voltage regulator is cool to touch and no wires hot. Put my nose near the stator and i smell that hot stator smell. I put my fingers on the RED color stator and it's hot but not to hot to touch. I let the Merc. cool down as we ate lunch and headed back downriver and near the end of the trip about 45 min. and i smell the stator again. Is this typical for my 60 h.p. Merc. stator to smell hot during this long trip?..........Tom

Re: Smells like a hot stator

If cooling is getting marginal, the top of the engine is the first part to heat up.

Just a thought

Perhaps it's time for a cooling impeller. I had this motor for 5 years now. Good water trail coming out..
