Re: smoke and water
So that's odd that after an electrical meltdown that you'd get some sort of water leak (or steam). Are you 100% positive that it's steam, cause I've seen electrical shorts under the hood of car before and the smoke was white (and stunk really bad). If it's just a head gasket or cracked head, that's the least costly failure, as head gaskets are inexpensive, and you could find a scrap head for a few bucks. Crack cases are worst case scenario. Torched electricals can be expensive, better than the cracked case. But you'd need to find out why the wiring failed to begin with.

MCM, could it be possible that the wiring to his timer base or stator fried, since it's obvious he had a short that melted the black wire in the harness, as well as others as he noted.

I'd do a quick compression test it should rule out any physical damage or blown gasket. The rule is I believe within 10 psi of each other on the cylinders. Then I'd pop the flywheel off and keep fingers crossed.

And welcome to iboats! Wish we all could meet under better circumstances.
