Re: smoke and water

Welcome claydog, thats a long way from the water pump, might be a blown head gasket though, or worse a cracked head or cylinder case.

Re: smoke and water

So that's odd that after an electrical meltdown that you'd get some sort of water leak (or steam). Are you 100% positive that it's steam, cause I've seen electrical shorts under the hood of car before and the smoke was white (and stunk really bad). If it's just a head gasket or cracked head, that's the least costly failure, as head gaskets are inexpensive, and you could find a scrap head for a few bucks. Crack cases are worst case scenario. Torched electricals can be expensive, better than the cracked case. But you'd need to find out why the wiring failed to begin with.

MCM, could it be possible that the wiring to his timer base or stator fried, since it's obvious he had a short that melted the black wire in the harness, as well as others as he noted.

I'd do a quick compression test it should rule out any physical damage or blown gasket. The rule is I believe within 10 psi of each other on the cylinders. Then I'd pop the flywheel off and keep fingers crossed.

And welcome to iboats! Wish we all could meet under better circumstances.

Re: smoke and water

Well if Claydog hadn't mentioned there was water coming out under the flywheel, Its possible the pryor elcetrical problems have nothing to do with this. Electrical smoke has a pretty distinct smell to it.

Re: smoke and water

Claydog, look at this diagram, click here part#'s 43 & 42 shows there's a water passage cover and gasket located right under or near the flywheel. The list says 88 model but I think thats just the part # for the 88. Whats the model # for your motor? It may be that you just have a blown water passage gasket ;)

Re: smoke and water

Do you have the water passage cover on top of the block underneath the flywheel, if so look there for the water leak. Here's the diag. for your model. click here

Re: smoke and water

Should be an easy fix, probably have t pull the flywheel though, hopefully the water coming out there didn't damage any elec. components.

Re: smoke and water

MCM is it possible that the gassket from the water passage leaking, shorted out my ground wire on my harnas and the white smoke cumming out was just steam

Re: smoke and water

Clay, water and electronic components is a bad mix. whoever designed that motor with a water passage and gasket in such close proximxty to ign./elec. parts should have been used as the model for the next anchor. I think the smoke you seen was more than likely steam.

Did the motor quit running as a result of the leak? If not I would repelace the gasket and then troubleshoot any ign. problems as needed. while you have the flywheel off check the condition of the stator and timer base.

RTV gasket sealer should work, I'm not sure what your manual calls for off hand though.
