While running the boat my bilge pump was left on manual and drained one of my batteries. After I went to start the engines I was was able to switch to the #2 battery and get the 2nd enginine running. She ran the whole rest of the day, no problem. The battery would not charge though. I got back home and replaced the battery because it would shut down the battery charger and it is 5 years old. I went to tilt the engine up and it started smoking. It looked like it was coming from under the flywheel? Smelled like something was arcing? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you hooked the battery up backward its gonna be expensive.

The battery is connected the right way. Could leaving the bilge pump on caused reverse polarity?

alrighty then, you just need to trace the smoke, prolly going to find some shorted out melted wires. If you can't find anything you'll need to pop the flywheel off and look under there.

For now I think I'd unplug the power pack and rectifier to keep them from getting fried , then try the tilt again to see if you can trace the smokes source. Theres probably something chafing, check around the tilt mechanism, theres a small harness for the tilt guage and tilt pump that passes near the pivot area.

Sounds more like rectifier took a dump, will smoke and even catch fire sometimes so disconnect battery till you trouble shoot it.

Thanks to all. It was the rectifier that burnt up.
