I have a 92 150hp Johnson, Motor had been running great all day Sat. Trailered back home and flushed salt water from motor as usual. Shut motor off and smoke bellowed out of the cover.Removed battery connections quickly and pulled cover to find that Voltage regulator had boiled over(cooked). I am going to replace it but am woundering if this is somthing that could happen internal to the regulator as is shot or should I be looking elsewhere for somthing that may have caused it to fail. I'm trying to find cost for a new one this morning and do not want to install and fry another one. Any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks

The reg/rec is water cooled and some motors require venting (by drilling a hole in the right place) to eliminate air pockets. Dhadley can give more scoop on this.

Re: Smoked Volt reg 92 150 OceanRunner?

The cooling ports seem to be working, It actually burned a hole thru the the fanalic material. Looks like the components inside shorted. It seems to be isolated to the regulator. I just don't want to put in a new one and have somthing else creating heatbuild up.
I recently installed a tach but it seems to be working fine. My only concern that I'm questioning,is I have an installed a switch between the 12volt supply to the tach since I could not tie it into my ignition switch. If tach is in the loop and power is not applied to the 12v connection if the switch is off could that create resistance. I dont think it would but thats the only thing that has been changed.

Re: Smoked Volt reg 92 150 OceanRunner?

Well, Back from Vacation, Installed new reg, rectifier and motor fires right up. Now I am getting poor idle and the alarm indicating overheat goes off as soon as I start the motor. I checked all connections and I can put my hand on the block and its hot but no more than normal.Getting plenty of oil as you can see it in the exhaust.Buzzer is in the controls up front. This is to monitor over heat and low oil correct. If I disconnect the sensors to see which is giving me the signal nI know where the oil and temps are but what about the fuel restriction sensor. I've looked in my manual but it gives a general discription but where should I be looking? If its a vac switch how can I test or should I just replace.

Thanks in advance
