I have this 1973 evinrude 55hp that Ihave had for one year. I had the carbs rebuilt. It has sit all winter. When I fired it up it started smoking. It will let up a little until I open up the throttle more than half way. Does any one have a idea of whats wrong?

Hi rob
Your 2-stroke motor should smoke. After sitting all winter it should smoke a lot. Did you have it winterized, fogged, etc? Are you running 100% fresh fuel? Could be one of the floats is a little stuck.

Thanks for the reply. What is fogged? And what do you mean by winterizing?

Re: smokes pretty bad

Hi Rob
A customary procedure when winterizing a motor (making ready for winter storage) is to fog the engine. This is to spray oil into the carbs until the engine dies. This is to try and coat the internal parts with oil so as to preserve them or prevent rust. Sometimes they will also squirt a little extra oil in the spark plug holes. So when you go to fire-up after storage you get a whole bunch of extra smoke and goo. Just don't back up to the garage door or a simular surface and fire up. At best you'll have to clean the door at worst you'll be repainting.

Thanks for the info. When I parked my boat for the winter I did not winterize it, so is it still normal for grease to come out of the prop.

Re: smokes pretty bad

Rob,When a motor sits for a spell during storage ,some or in cases most of the gas evaporates from the fuel lines and carb bowls and the two cycle oil stays resulting in an oil rich mix on start-up that can take several minutes to clear. This can also foul the sparkplugs with deposits that should be cleaned or replaced. If you live in a winter climate that allows you to run motor on occassion in the off season instead of letting it set idle for extended periods ,I recommend running on hose every two or three weeks to keep the juices flowing.
