smoking on start up

My 71 100hp evinrude starts hard sthen smokes and runs rough for a bit. any suggestions? Thanks

You need to be a bit more specific about what's going on. Hard starting could be caused by a lot of things...bad spark, timing off, fuel probs etc. Does the motor run much better after it's warmed up?
Are you running the motor on the water on in a test barrel?

I'm running on a lake. The motor runs really rough, I have to give it throttle just to keep it running. then it smooths out.

When is the last time carbs were cleaned and/or rebuilt?

Carbs flooding over? When was the last time the carbs were serviced?

Heavy oil mix will smoke the motor, perhaps your mix is a little off.

Oil mix is correct. I was hoping the carbs wouldn't need rebuilding until after the season. It start doing this after the boat was in the water for a while.

Have you performed all the usual tests? I have the same motor, look into your service manual.
