Re: smoking starter

I'm not an expert by no means like some of the guys on this site, but have you tried checking your contacts at battery, solonoid, and starter? From there if it all checks out, you may have to open the starter and have a look at all the connections. It sounds like there's obviously a bad one somewhere for the resistance to be so strong that it starts to smoke. Also you should check your brushes in the motor maybe the brush isn't making good contact with the stature motor and not all the power is being transfered, hence the slow turn? Just a thought.

Re: smoking starter

remove the top bolt from the armature assembly, from there, there is a series of washers so remeber the sequence. Remove the two through bolts from the starter at the top. from there you should be able to slide the armature out of the housing. from there check your brushes for wear, check your springs as well on the brushes, check the commutator for any damage like pitts and worn out spots. just make sure that anywires you do see that they are all are firmly in place and that none of the sheild around the wires is burned or melted.
