Smoother transition between displacement and planing?

I put this comment in the "when is my boat on plane" but it's really a different topic.<br /><br />I have a deep V hull (24' Cuddy) with 225 o/b. It is either on plane or it isn't. I'm sure not uncommon for this style. I boat in Maine and frequenly have squeamish guests - between the sometimes cold wind and the seas, running at even lowest planing speed (maybe 20 kts) is not comfortable for the "wimmin". Dropping off plane slows the boat to displacement speed, which is 1.34 * sqrt(lwl) or a whole 6.5 knots! Not very useful to actually go anywhere. As you know attempting anywhere in between just gives you wasted gas, lots of engine noise, a bow-up plowing attitude, and NO increase in speed.<br /><br />This boat is nearing the end of its life - what should I look for in a hull design that gives me more of a continuum in speed possibilities? I certainly don't want a bigger boat - smaller if anything (gas $$$).<br /><br />Or is this just not in the cards in small boats?

Look at boats with the newer style "stepped" hull design.Charlie

The best and easiest solution for you is to buy a set of adjustable trim tabs. My 23' CC is the same way.
